Heart diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, including arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, myocarditis and cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Current treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) includes antiplatelet drug antiplatelet drugs, anticoagulants, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, statins, beta-blockers, and nitrates. But due to the potential adverse effects of some drugs its long time usage impairs the life quality of patients. The Discovery of new drugs is always desired.
In recent times, studies have found that berberine has a large application in the prevention and treatment of CVD. The development of pharmacology also provides evidence of multi-targets of berberine on CVD.
Recent research has shown that Berberine has an effect of protecting heart failure, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, arrhythmias, and platelet aggregation.
As per recent research, Berberine has been reputed to decrease CVD through reducing oxidative stress, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, insulin resistance, and improving mood. A multicenter randomized trial showed Berberine reduces LDL-c levels as well as total cholesterol/HDL-c while increasing Apo A1, all of which improves heart health reducing CVD.
Berberine may be considered a promising tool to counteract cardiovascular disorders. Scientists believe that after further research, Berberine will show a more important role in the treatment of CVD.
